Eintracht Frankfurt youngster Niko Ilicevic could make Bundesliga history on Sunday evening when Adi Hütter’s SGE host Hamburg. The highly rated attacking midfielder celebrates his 16th birthday on Saturday and is expected to feature in Frankfurt’s senior matchday squad for the first time just one day later.

Should Hütter introduce the teenager against Hamburg, Ilicevic would equal Youssoufa Moukoko’s record as the youngest player in Bundesliga history. The former Borussia Dortmund striker made his senior league debut at the age of 16 years and one day in November 2020.

The potential milestone carries an additional family connection. Ilicevic’s uncle, former Croatian international Ivo Ilicevic, spent five seasons at Hamburger SV between 2011 and 2016. The elder Ilicevic enjoyed a lengthy career in German football and played a particularly important role in helping Hamburg preserve their Bundesliga status during one of the club’s most dramatic relegation battles.

For Niko, Sunday’s encounter could therefore represent both a historic personal achievement and an unusual continuation of his family’s Bundesliga story.

Uncle Ivo Ilicevic’s distinguished career in German football

The family connection to HSV adds considerable historical significance to Sunday’s possible debut. Born in Aschaffenburg in November 1986, Niko’s uncle Ivo enjoyed a lengthy professional career in German football, representing six Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs across a journey that began in the lower divisions and eventually took him onto the international stage with Croatia.

Ilicevic developed in the youth ranks of local club Viktoria Aschaffenburg before moving to SV Darmstadt 98. The technically gifted attacking midfielder began establishing himself in senior football with the Lilies. His performances attracted the attention of VfL Bochum, who brought him to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2006.

A subsequent loan spell at SpVgg Greuther Fürth offered Ilicevic greater opportunities to demonstrate his attacking qualities. The move proved an important developmental step, with the midfielder registering four goals in 38 second-division appearances before joining 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the summer of 2009.

It was in the Pfalz that Ilicevic truly established himself as an influential figure in German professional football.

Under head coach Marco Kurz, Kaiserslautern assembled one of the strongest teams in the 2009/10 2. Bundesliga campaign. Ilicevic contributed four goals in 30 league appearances as the Red Devils secured the second-division championship and returned to Germany’s top flight after four seasons away.

The following campaign represented another significant milestone. Kaiserslautern surprised many observers by finishing seventh in the Bundesliga, with Ilicevic contributing five league goals in 21 appearances. The midfielder also received recognition at international level, earning senior appearances for Croatia.

His performances eventually attracted the attention of Hamburger SV, who secured his services at the end of the summer 2011 transfer window. Ilicevic subsequently spent five seasons at the Volksparkstadion, becoming part of an HSV side that experienced frequent managerial changes, fluctuating performances, and repeated battles to preserve its Bundesliga status.

By the time his five-year association with HSV ended in 2016, Ilicevic had accumulated 84 Bundesliga appearances for the Hanseatic club, scoring ten league goals. His career subsequently continued abroad with Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia and Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan. A brief return to Germany followed in 2019, when the veteran attacker joined 1. FC Nürnberg and made three further Bundesliga appearances before leaving the club that summer.

Ivo Ilicevic helped preserve Hamburg’s Bundesliga status

For all the different chapters of his career, one of Ilicevic’s most consequential moments in German football came during HSV’s extraordinary 2015 relegation battle. Hamburg had spent every season in the Bundesliga since the competition’s foundation in 1963. That distinction was under serious threat after Bruno Labbadia’s side finished the 2014/15 campaign in 16th place, forcing a two-legged relegation playoff against Karlsruher SC.

In the 73rd minute, the Croatian international scored the equalizer that rescued a 1-1 draw for Hamburg and prevented Karlsruhe from taking a first-leg advantage into the return fixture. Four days later, the two teams met again at Karlsruhe’s Wildparkstadion. A 2-1 Hamburg victory preserved the club’s Bundesliga status for another season. Ilicevic had played his part in setting up that escape.

The Croatian eventually departed in 2016, two years before HSV suffered its first Bundesliga relegation in 2018. Now, more than a decade after his uncle helped Hamburg preserve its place in Germany’s top flight, Niko Ilicevic stands on the threshold of beginning his own Bundesliga career against the very same club.

Adi Hütter praises Frankfurt’s exceptional young talent

Hütter confirmed at the Friday pre-match press conference that the attacking midfielder would be included in Frankfurt’s plans for Sunday’s Bundesliga meeting with HSV. The Austrian coach spoke enthusiastically about Ilicevic’s development, while emphasizing the importance of managing the youngster’s introduction to professional football.

“He won’t have much time to celebrate because, in all likelihood, he’ll be in the squad,” Hütter explained. “To be part of a Bundesliga squad at 16 years of age is already extraordinary.”

“He was part of the training camp and has developed tremendously over the past few months,” Hütter continued. “He’s an exceptional footballer with the ball, but he’s also learned to stand his ground and win challenges.”

Ilicevic first attracted widespread attention in May 2025 when he participated in Frankfurt’s senior training sessions at just 14 years of age. The German-Croatian youngster has subsequently continued his development in Frankfurt’s youth ranks, registering four goals and three assists in seven appearances for the club’s U19 side this season.

“If I feel that it isn’t the right moment, I won’t do it,” the Frankfurt trainer explained. “The time will come. He’ll play eventually, and then he’ll simply be 16 years and a few weeks old.”
