On the same day that Charlottenburg’s Hertha BSC continued their remarkable undefeated start to the 2026/27 2. Bundesliga campaign, their blue-and-white brethren from the south dug out a massively important victory in the Matchday 10 Top-Spiel. Baden-Württemberg’s Karlsruher SC climbed off the bottom of the 2. Bundesliga table with a 2-1 win over visiting East Swabian side 1. FC Heidenheim. The third victory of the season for Maximilian Senft’s embattled KSC enables the Phönix club to rise above the relegation zone for the weekend.

Early fireworks in the stands and on the pitch

After both sets of ultras traded impressive Halloween-inspired pyrotechnic displays, the early action at the Wildparkstadion mimicked the sustained flares seen in both supporters’ sections. The raucous hometown fans thought they had an early goal to celebrate. Karlsruhe’s Marvin Wanitzek skillfully slipped in striker Shio Fukuda in the second minute. The flag initially went up as Fukuda rolled the ball into the back of the net. A VAR review confirmed the Japanese forward’s offside position two minutes later. The KSC Kurve made a point of chanting that the decision didn’t matter via one of German football’s more vulgar mantras.

The blue-clad KSC, to their credit, essentially played on as if the disallowed goal wasn’t a factor at all. The Fächerstädtercontinued to manufacture close-range chances. Karlsruhe winger Deniz Ofli put an effort over the bar in the seventh minute. KSC midfielder Tim Civeja forced a quality save out of FCH keeper Thomas Dähne less than a minute later. Somehow, in the 11th minute, Fukuda, Wanitzek, and Civeja weren’t able to capitalize on a three-against-one situation that left Dähne helpless. Schmidt’s Ostalbenschwaben began to punch back a tad, swarming the KSC net before flashing over in the 13th minute and forcing a clearance off the line shortly afterward.

KSC finally make it count

An opening quarter of an hour that left few players, not to mention journalists, with time to catch their breath gradually gave way to some more controlled midfield play. Not long after the 15-minute mark, however, the hosts did manage to net a goal that would count. KSC captain Wanitzek did a good job springing Civeja, who in turn splendidly shook off several FCH markers en route to carving out some shooting space on the right side of the penalty area. Civeja supplied an equally impressive finish across goal into the bottom-left corner for the 19th-minute 1-0.

Badeners maintain plenty of bite

Maximilian Senft’s men proceeded to dominate the rest of the first half, racking up a nearly 60 percent win rate in ground duels as the half-hour mark approached. Fans rightly cheered the KSC on as the players chased after seemingly every loose ball with tenacious vigor. As inspiring as KSC’s football was, however, the finishing quality simply wasn’t there. Heidenheim slowly wrestled back more possession near the end of the opening 45, naturally leaving themselves more vulnerable to chipped-ball counters that could bypass their press.

Two excellent opportunities for the hosts to double their advantage before the break nevertheless fell prey to KSC’s finishing problems. Heavy touches from Fukuda in the 40th and 43rd minutes squandered lightning-quick counterattacks. The crowd remained firmly engaged and vocally supportive of their team as the halftime whistle blew. One could still tell that, without a second goal, some of the collective energy was beginning to wane. Karlsruhe’s deserved lead remained a slender one, even if Heidenheim didn’t look particularly threatening.

KSC eventually make it count again

Schmidt unsurprisingly reacted with an attack-oriented double substitution at halftime. Alessandro Vogt and experienced Bundesliga attacker Mathias Honsak were introduced at the break. An improved performance from the East Swabian visitors saw former Karlsruhe loanee Mikkel Kaufmann come within inches of leveling the score from a corner in the 49th minute. Schmidt’s men put on a more convincing display after the change of ends, yet still struggled to manufacture dangerous opportunities.

Heidenheim continued to exhibit vulnerability to long-ball counters. This was best exemplified by another Fukuda chance at the hour mark. A ball inadvertently headed into Fukuda’s path by Jan Schöppner probably should have resulted in the 2-0. The former Gladbach striker, this time a tad surprised by the gift laid at his feet, simply couldn’t find the right touch once more. Civeja, too, couldn’t finish with the required precision on another big opportunity nine minutes later.

It took a set piece for the hosts to finally double their advantage. KSC skipper Wanitzek took advantage of a free kick awarded just outside the area in the 78th minute after Kaufmann fouled defender Paul Scholl in an aerial challenge. The captain curled home a beautiful effort over the wall from 20 meters out, slightly right of center. It was very much a goal worth seeing, and few could be blamed for thinking the match had been decided by that point. Heidenheim were nonetheless not quite done yet.

Hosts survive Halloween scare

The visitors unexpectedly pulled a goal back in the 88th minute, scoring from a free kick outside the area when FCH substitutes Leart Paqarada and Vogt combined to make it 2-1. KSC defenders were then called upon to clear potential equalizers off the line in two crucial situations. Sandro Tremoulet (90+2) and Christoph Kobald (90+4) ensured that all three points were ultimately secured. Cheered on by their fans, the entire Karlsruhe team also warded off a late FCH corner at the death.

GGFN 2. Bundesliga Player of the Match: Marvin Wanitzek (8)

Karlsruhe’s veteran captain led by example in a crucial victory for Maximilian Senft’s struggling side. Wanitzek provided the assist for Tim Civeja’s 19th-minute opener before stepping forward to deliver the decisive moment himself in the 78th minute. His beautifully executed free kick from approximately 20 meters out proved the difference between the two teams and secured three enormously valuable points for the hosts.

The 32-year-old’s statistics reflected his considerable influence on the encounter. Wanitzek registered one goal and one assist, took three shots, and created three additional shooting opportunities for his teammates. He recorded 71 touches, completed 74 percent of his 54 attempted passes, and covered an impressive 11.95 kilometres. His 24 sprints further illustrated the captain’s commitment to leading Karlsruhe’s energetic performance.

Wanitzek nevertheless had plenty of help from his defensive colleagues. All three members of KSC’s back three — Christoph Kobald, Paul Scholl, and Sandro Tremoulet — produced crucial goal-line clearances over the course of the evening. Tremoulet and Kobald’s interventions deep into stoppage time proved particularly important after Heidenheim had reduced the deficit to 2-1. Their collective defensive efforts ensured that Wanitzek’s spectacular winner would not go to waste.

For a Karlsruhe side desperately seeking to escape the relegation zone, the captain provided precisely the leadership and quality required. His contributions at both ends of the pitch helped secure KSC’s third league victory of the campaign and offered renewed hope that Senft’s team can build momentum after a difficult opening ten matchdays.
