Frank Schmidt speaks on Heidenheim failing to live up to supporters’ choreo instructions

Heidenheim head coach Frank Schmidt offered an interesting fan-centric assessment of his team’s performance following Saturday evening’s 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC. The veteran Bundesliga trainer conceded that the hosts had thoroughly deserved their victory, contrasting Karlsruhe’s determination with his own players’ inability to match the intensity demanded by Heidenheim’s travelling supporters.

The two sets of supporters had provided a spectacular backdrop to the Matchday 10 encounter at the Wildparkstadion. Heidenheim’s travelling contingent unfurled a choreography calling upon their players to be “giftig” (venomous), accompanied by a sustained pyrotechnic display. Karlsruhe’s ultras responded with an even more elaborate display of their own.

As it turned out, the contrast in intensity extended well beyond the stands. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Schmidt immediately acknowledged that it was Karlsruhe who had responded to the occasion.

“Our supporters had a choreography before the match, or at kickoff, calling on us to be venomous,” Schmidt remarked. “But it was only KSC who were venomous from the very first second.”

Schmidt acknowledges Karlsruhe’s superior intensity

As Get German Football News documented in its match report and player ratings, Karlsruhe established control throughout most of the first half. Karlsruhe’s presence in the duels was particularly striking. Though Schmidt’s FCH were eventually able to narrow the statistical gap, Maximilian Senft’s team effectively managed to retain the edge over the course of the 90 minutes. As Heidenheim began winning more duels, KSC continued to exploit the space with incisive runs and quick counterattacks.

“We were fortunate right at the beginning with the offside goal, when we were caught chasing back and it was narrowly offside,” Schmidt explained. “But that didn’t sharpen our senses. There were many quick [long] balls [launched] in our half, behind and in front of our defensive line. We lost too many duels, especially on the ground. KSC were also able to retain the ball better than we were and played forward well, directly and quickly.”

The Heidenheim coach identified hesitation and poor decision-making as additional factors behind his team’s struggles.

“We were too slow mentally. We got caught up in things that don’t help you win a football match, and we were punished for that with the 1-0.”

Schmidt acknowledged that his side had produced a handful of attacking moments, but conceded that Karlsruhe created considerably better opportunities. The visitors improved somewhat after the interval, with former KSC striker Mikkel Kaufmann missing a promising headed opportunity. Nevertheless, Heidenheim continued to struggle with Karlsruhe’s aggressive approach.

Marvin Wanitzek eventually doubled the hosts’ advantage with a spectacular 78th-minute free kick before Alessandro Vogt pulled a goal back late on. The visitors threatened an equalizer during a frantic finish, but Karlsruhe’s defenders produced several crucial goal-line clearances to preserve the victory.

Heidenheim coach accepts his share of responsibility

Schmidt returned to the subject of Heidenheim’s lack of aggression when questioned about the large gaps in central areas and the repeated isolation of his defenders. Schmidt also noted that Karlsruhe had apparently covered approximately six kilometers more than his team.

“It’s embarrassing for me to sit here and say that we knew exactly what was coming, but unfortunately, we didn’t show it,” Schmidt admitted. “None of us did a good job, and none of us fulfilled our responsibilities. That applies to me as the coach as well as to the team on the pitch.”

For Karlsruhe, Saturday’s victory represented an important step away from the foot of the 2. Bundesliga table. For Heidenheim, Schmidt’s candid assessment provided a stark warning that improved results will require more than simply recalling the performances of previous weeks.

The supporters had demanded a venomous spirit befitting All Hallows’ Eve. Karlsruhe supplied it, and even the opposing coach was prepared to acknowledge as much.
