Will MS Dhoni play IPL 2027? CSK veteran finally responds

The big question surrounding Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season is whether MS Dhoni will return to the field for another campaign. The former India captain has finally addressed the speculation, offering an update that will keep millions of fans hopeful while making it clear that his fitness will determine the outcome.

Dhoni, who missed the entire IPL 2026 season, has not announced his retirement from the tournament.

MS Dhoni reveals timeline for IPL 2027 decision

At a healthcare event in Bengaluru, Dhoni was asked about his plans for the next IPL season and he responded in his trademark humorous style. Rather than confirming his participation, MSD explained that his decision would depend on the results of medical assessments and his physical condition.

“Doc, I will have to go through the test. You will have to give me the report, and then before December, I will have to see, you know, how strong I am to maybe play one more season,” Dhoni said.

His comments suggest that supporters could receive clarity on his future before December 2026. However, the former CSK skipper has stopped short of confirming that he will play in IPL 2027.

“Old vintage vehicle”: Dhoni’s humorous response

Dhoni continued his response with another light-hearted remark, placing the responsibility for his fitness on the medical professionals.

“And if I am not, then, you know, you will have to make sure that you do everything right with me and make sure that this old vintage vehicle is running well on the road. So all the pressure is on them,” he added.

For CSK supporters, Dhoni’s willingness to consider another season is encouraging. Nevertheless, the final decision will depend on whether he believes he can contribute effectively to the team.

Why MS Dhoni missed IPL 2026?

Dhoni did not feature in a single match during IPL 2026 after struggling with a calf injury. His absence was a major talking point throughout the season, particularly because he had remained an important presence in the CSK dressing room and lower-order batting plans.

Without their former captain on the field, Chennai struggled to find consistency and finished eighth in the standings, missing out on the playoffs. The campaign followed another difficult season in 2025, when the franchise finished at the bottom of the table.

Although Ruturaj Gaikwad has been leading the side since Dhoni stepped down from the captaincy after the 2023 season, the veteran’s experience remains valuable. His finishing ability, wicketkeeping skills and understanding of pressure situations could still make him an asset if he returns.

CSK waiting for their former captain’s call

CSK management has previously indicated that Dhoni’s future remains his own decision. The franchise has not received a definitive confirmation that he will retire, leaving the door open for another season.

His potential return would give the team continuity and experience as it looks to improve on its recent performances. However, CSK will also need to plan for the future and ensure that its squad does not depend entirely on one veteran player.

For now, the franchise and its supporters must wait for Dhoni’s fitness assessment and final decision.
