Former Bundesliga coach Marco Rose has spoken enthusiastically about his first months in English football. The 50-year-old, who previously coached Borussia Mönchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig, is currently enjoying an upturn in fortunes with AFC Bournemouth following a difficult start to the Premier League campaign.
After failing to win any of their opening six league fixtures, Bournemouth have recently registered three consecutive victories. Rose’s side have also enjoyed success in European competition, with the German trainer preparing for Thursday’s Europa League encounter against Sparta Prague.
Speaking in an interview with Kicker, Rose reflected on his experience in the Premier League and the differences between German and English football.
“It’s something special to be able to work there,” Rose explained. “One senses the global attention. It’s football in its purest form. I appreciate German fan culture, but I also like the English version. It’s a little quieter here at times, but when the match calls for it, the stadiums generate extraordinary energy. I like the people in England, who treat one another with great respect. I really feel comfortable here.”
Marco Rose jokes about Thomas Tuchel and Marcus Tavernier
Rose also reserved praise for Bournemouth attacker Marcus Tavernier, who has scored five goals in nine Premier League appearances this season. Asked whether the 26-year-old might soon receive a call-up from England national team coach Thomas Tuchel, Rose declined to speculate but acknowledged his player’s impressive performances.
“You’ll have to ask Thomas about that,” Rose remarked. “But I think several of our lads have made a good case for themselves, and Marcus in particular gives us a great deal.”
When asked whether Tuchel had attended a Bournemouth home fixture to watch Tavernier, Rose delivered a lighthearted response.
“No, I don’t think so,” Rose said with a laugh. “Perhaps he couldn’t get a ticket because our stadium is a little smaller.”
