PSG 4-2 Barcelona: Doué, Hernández, Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz scored as the European champions outthink and outlast Hansi Flick’s side. Barça’s first defeat of the season comes days before El Clásico.

Every unbeaten run ends somewhere. For Barcelona, it ended on a cold, loud night at the Parc des Princes. Paris Saint-Germain, the defending European champions, beat Hansi Flick’s side 4-2 in a match that swung back and forth until a ruthless final ten minutes settled the smoke.

Barcelona arrived as the form team in Europe, unbeaten in every competition and riding a wave of confidence. They leave with their first defeat of the season, and the timing could hardly be worse. Real Madrid come to Montjuïc this weekend for El Clásico, six points behind the Catalans in La Liga and sure to have watched this result closely.

This was no collapse. Barcelona came from behind twice, and Lamine Yamal scored a goal that only a handful of players in the world could have scored. But they were not at their glittering best, and against a PSG side this sharp, and a coach this well prepared, being slightly below your best is fatal.

A cagey opening

The first half-hour was a game of chess, with both sides respecting the other. PSG pressed high and in packs, as they have done throughout Luis Enrique’s tenure. Barcelona’s build-up from the back, normally so assured, looked hurried, and several passes into midfield were intercepted before they could do any damage.

Barcelona’s first real sight of goal came midway through the half, when Yamal drifted in from the right and curled an effort over the bar. It was a glimpse of what was to come, but the teenager was swamped every time he touched the ball. PSG had two and often three players around him.

The hosts were the more purposeful side. Vitinha set the tempo from deep, switching play quickly and pulling Barcelona’s midfield from one side to the other. On the flank, Désiré Doué was a constant menace, running at defenders and refusing to let the visitors’ back line settle.

Doué breaks the deadlock

The goal had been coming, and it was Doué who scored it in the 38th minute. PSG worked the ball patiently across the edge of the Barcelona area until Doué found a yard of space in the left channel. One touch to set himself, then a low finish past the goalkeeper’s dive, and the Parc des Princes erupted.

Barcelona’s defending was passive. Nobody stepped out to close Doué down, and he had all the time he needed to pick his spot. It was the first sign of a defensive fragility that would cost Flick’s side again before the night was over.

Barcelona went in at half-time a goal down. On the balance of play, they could have few complaints.

Espart answers back

Whatever Flick said at the interval worked, at least for a while. Barcelona came out with more intent and moved the ball faster, and the press that had suffocated them in the first half began to look stretched.

Ten minutes after the restart, they were level. In the 55th minute, Xavi Espart, one of the brightest products of Barcelona’s academy, arrived late in the box to meet a cut-back and sweep the ball home. It was a well-crafted goal with the boldness that has defined Barcelona’s season, and the travelling supporters in the corner of the stadium found their voice.

For the next quarter of an hour Barcelona enjoyed their best spell of the match. Yamal began to find pockets of space; PSG were pinned deeper than they would have liked, and a second visiting goal looked possible.

Hernández restores PSG’s lead

PSG’s experience showed instead. In the 72nd minute they went back in front, and the scorer was an unexpected one. Lucas Hernández, the veteran defender, attacked a set-piece delivery, got ahead of his marker and headed it beyond the goalkeeper.

The blow followed a familiar pattern for Barcelona. They had dominated a spell without making it count, and PSG punished them at the first real opportunity. Luis Enrique’s side does not need long periods of pressure to hurt opponents. They need moments, and they rarely waste them.

A Yamal screamer

If PSG thought the contest was settled, Lamine Yamal had other ideas. In the 79th minute, he produced the moment of the night. Picking the ball up on the right, he cut inside onto his favoured left foot and unleashed a curling strike from distance that arrowed into the top corner. The goalkeeper could only watch.

It was a goal worthy of any stage, and for a few minutes it looked like it would be the headline. Barcelona were level again, the momentum was theirs, and there were more than ten minutes left to find a winner.

Two Minutes that decided it

Within two minutes, the game had turned on its head again, and this time Barcelona had only themselves to blame. In the 81st minute, a defensive error handed possession to PSG in a dangerous area, and Vitinha needed no second invitation. The Portuguese midfielder, outstanding all night, drove the ball past the goalkeeper to put PSG back in front.

It was a cruel way to concede after the effort it took to draw level, and it drained the visitors’ belief. Barcelona threw players forward in search of a third equaliser, leaving gaps that PSG were happy to exploit.

In the 86th minute Fabián Ruiz settled it. PSG broke through a disorganised Barcelona defence, and the Spaniard finished calmly to make it 4-2. Home supporters were already celebrating, and PSG ran out the final minutes in complete control.

How Luis Enrique outfoxed Flick

The scoreline will be remembered for its drama, but the result was shaped as much on the touchline as on the pitch. Three tactical decisions gave Luis Enrique the edge over his German counterpart.

1. Smothering Lamine Yamal
Barcelona’s attack runs through their teenage star, and Luis Enrique planned accordingly. Whenever Yamal received the ball on the right, PSG’s full-back was quickly joined by a midfielder and often the near-side winger tracking back, forming a triangle that shut off his route inside. Barcelona were repeatedly forced to recycle possession sideways instead of driving at the heart of the PSG defence. Yamal still produced a moment of genius, a reminder of how hard he is to contain completely. But one moment from your best player is rarely enough to win in Paris, and Luis Enrique’s plan limited him to exactly that.

2. Pressing Barcelona at the Source
Flick’s Barcelona like to play out from the back, using short passes through the centre-backs and a deep-lying midfielder to draw opponents forward. Luis Enrique denied them that comfort. PSG’s front line angled their runs to cut off the passing lanes into midfield, pushing Barcelona’s defenders towards the touchline or into longer, riskier balls. The pressure built across 90 minutes and finally told in the 81st minute, when a harried Barcelona defence gave the ball away, and Vitinha punished them. That mistake was not bad luck. It was the product of a plan designed to make Barcelona uncomfortable in precisely that area of the pitch.

3. Owning the midfield and Striking Late
Vitinha was the conductor, and Luis Enrique built his side’s control around him. PSG switched play rapidly from flank to flank, stretching Barcelona’s midfield and opening the channels Doué used for the opening goal. Just as importantly, PSG managed the game’s rhythm. When Barcelona chased the match after Vitinha’s goal, PSG stayed compact and waited for the counter-attack that Fabián Ruiz finished. Flick’s attacking instincts have served Barcelona brilliantly this season, but here they left his side exposed, and Luis Enrique was ready for it.

What it means

There are positives for Barcelona even in defeat. Scoring twice away to the European champions is no small achievement. Espart’s goal was further evidence of the club’s knack for producing talented young players, and Yamal again showed he can decide matches on his own.

But the defensive concerns cannot be ignored. Four goals conceded, at least two of them avoidable, will trouble Flick. The passive defending for the opener and the error before Vitinha’s winner are exactly the kind of lapses that elite opponents punish.

For PSG, this was a statement. Any suggestion that the European champions have lost their edge was emphatically answered. They were clinical, patient and resilient, with an answer every time they were pegged back. Doué, Vitinha and Hernández all excelled, and Luis Enrique will be as pleased with his side’s character as with their quality.

All Eyes on the Clásico

Barcelona have little time to recover. Real Madrid arrives this weekend, and the six-point lead in La Liga gives Flick’s side some breathing room. But nothing would lift Madrid more than taking advantage of a wounded rival.

How Barcelona responds will say a great deal about this team. A first defeat can be a wake-up call or the start of a wobble. Flick will need his side to tighten up at the back quickly if they want to protect their advantage.

On this evidence, there is plenty of quality to work with. There is also plenty of work to do before Sunday.

PSG: Doué 38′, Hernández 72′, Vitinha 81′, Fabián Ruiz 86′
Barcelona: Espart 55′, Lamine Yamal 79′
