Every cricketer dreams of ending an international career on a high note. Some achieve that with a match-winning performance, a memorable century or a victory celebrated by teammates and fans. Others, however, experience a less glamorous farewell, walking back to the pavilion without scoring in what turns out to be their final innings.

Cricket is an unpredictable game, and even the most accomplished batters are not immune to its uncertainties. A delivery that beats the defence, a mistimed shot or a moment of misjudgement can bring an innings to an abrupt end. When such a dismissal happens in a player’s final international appearance, it often becomes an unexpected footnote to an otherwise remarkable career.

Interestingly, some of the biggest names in cricket have experienced precisely this situation. Sir Don Bradman, whose Test batting average of 99.94 remains one of the sport’s most extraordinary achievements, famously scored a duck in his final Test innings. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly and West Indies great Shivnarine Chanderpaul also finished their Test careers with scoreless final innings.

These stories demonstrate that a player’s final score does not necessarily reflect the quality of their career. Let’s have a look at some famous batters whose final international innings ended in a duck.

10 famous players who scored a duck in their final international innings

1. Sir Don Bradman – Australia

Bradman’s final Test innings remains one of the most famous moments in cricket history. The Australian legend needed just four runs to finish his Test career with a batting average of exactly 100, but his farewell did not unfold as expected. During the fifth Ashes Test against England at The Oval in August 1948, Bradman walked to the crease to a tremendous reception from the crowd and the opposing players. However, England leg-spinner Eric Hollies bowled him for a duck with a googly, ending his innings after just two deliveries.

Bradman finished his Test career with 6,996 runs at an extraordinary average of 99.94. Although he missed the opportunity to reach the landmark average of 100, his achievements ensured that his legacy remained untouched by the disappointing final innings.

2. Sourav Ganguly – India

Ganguly enjoyed a distinguished international career, establishing himself as one of India’s most influential captains and left-handed batters. He played a major role in changing India’s approach to overseas cricket and led the team through several memorable victories. Ganguly’s final international appearance came during the fourth Test against Australia in Nagpur in November 2008. He made an impressive 85 in India’s first innings, giving fans a glimpse of his batting ability before his farewell.

However, his final innings ended on a disappointing note when Australian spinner Jason Krejza dismissed him for a golden duck. India won the Test by 172 runs, allowing Ganguly to finish his international career as part of a victorious team despite his individual disappointment in the second innings.

3. Shivnarine Chanderpaul – West Indies

Chanderpaul was one of the most dependable batters produced by West Indies cricket. Recognised for his unusual stance, exceptional concentration and ability to bat for long periods, he remained a key figure in the team’s batting line-up for many years.

His final Test appearance came against England in Barbados in April 2015. Chanderpaul’s last innings ended without a run after he faced nine deliveries, with England fast bowler James Anderson dismissing him.

The dismissal marked the end of a remarkable Test career in which Chanderpaul accumulated 11,867 runs at an average above 51. His consistency across different conditions and opposition attacks ensured that he remained one of the most respected batters of his generation.

4. Ian Bell – England

Ian Bell was a technically accomplished batter who represented England across formats and played an important role in several successful campaigns. His elegant stroke play and ability to build substantial innings made him a regular presence in England’s Test side for much of his career.

Bell’s final Test appearance came against Pakistan in Sharjah in November 2015. After scoring 40 in England’s first innings, he returned to the crease for what would become his final international innings. Unfortunately, Bell was dismissed for a six-ball duck by Shoaib Malik. The dismissal brought an abrupt end to his Test career, but it could not overshadow his contribution to English cricket. He finished with 7,727 Test runs, including 22 centuries.

5. Azhar Ali – Pakistan

Azhar Ali was one of Pakistan’s most reliable Test batters, known for his patience, discipline and ability to construct long innings. Across his career, he scored more than 7,000 Test runs and became an important figure in Pakistan’s middle order. His final international appearance came during the third Test against England in Karachi in December 2022. Having announced his retirement before the match, Azhar entered the contest knowing that it would be his final opportunity to represent Pakistan.

His final innings ended in a duck when England spinner Jack Leach dismissed him. Despite the scoreless farewell, Azhar received a guard of honour from the English players as he left the field, providing a fitting tribute to his service to the game.

6. Vinoo Mankad – India

Vinoo Mankad was one of India’s most accomplished cricketers during the early years of the country’s Test history. A talented left-handed batter and left-arm bowler, he made significant contributions with both bat and ball. Mankad played an important role in establishing India’s reputation in international cricket during the 1940s and 1950s. His batting included several substantial innings, while his bowling made him a valuable all-rounder in the side.

His final Test appearance came against West Indies in Delhi in February 1959. Mankad’s final innings ended without scoring, bringing the curtain down on a career in which he scored 2,109 Test runs and claimed 162 wickets. Although his farewell lacked a final batting contribution, Mankad’s place in Indian cricket history was already firmly established through his all-round performances.

7. Aamer Sohail – Pakistan

Aamer Sohail was an attacking opening batter who represented Pakistan during the 1990s. He was known for taking the initiative against bowlers and helping Pakistan establish strong starts in international matches. Sohail played a significant role in Pakistan’s batting line-up during an era that featured several outstanding players. His aggressive approach at the top of the order made him a valuable option in both Test and limited-overs cricket.

His international career eventually came to an end without the memorable final innings that many players hope for. Sohail was dismissed for a duck in his final international innings, adding an unfortunate ending to a career that included more than 5,000 international runs.

Nevertheless, his contributions during Pakistan’s competitive years in the 1990s remain an important part of his cricketing legacy.

8. Andrew Symonds – Australia

Andrew Symonds was a powerful middle-order batter and versatile all-rounder who played a significant role in Australia’s international success during the 2000s. He was particularly valued for his ability to accelerate the scoring and contribute with both bat and ball.

Symonds played important innings in limited-overs cricket and became known for his aggressive stroke play. His athletic fielding and useful off-spin and medium-pace bowling further strengthened his value to the Australian team. His final international appearance came in a T20I against Pakistan in Dubai in May 2009. Symonds was dismissed for a first-ball duck by Shahid Afridi, bringing his international career to an abrupt end.

Although the final innings was brief, Symonds’ impact on Australian cricket was considerable. His all-round abilities made him a key member of one of the strongest international teams of his era.

9. Gautam Gambhir – India

Gautam Gambhir played a crucial role in some of India’s most memorable international victories. His contributions in the finals of the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup remain among the defining moments of his playing career. Known for his determination and ability to perform under pressure, Gambhir was a dependable top-order batter who frequently delivered important runs in high-stakes matches.

His final international appearance came during the third Test against England in Mohali in November 2016. Gambhir’s final innings ended in a duck, bringing his international playing career to a close without the farewell performance he might have hoped for.

Despite that disappointing ending, Gambhir finished his career with more than 10,000 international runs across formats. His contributions in two World Cup finals ensured that he would be remembered for far more than his final score.

10. Eoin Morgan – England

Eoin Morgan was one of the most influential figures in England’s limited-overs cricket history. As captain, he helped transform the team’s approach to ODI cricket and guided England to their first men’s ODI World Cup title in 2019. Morgan’s aggressive batting, innovative leadership and willingness to embrace attacking cricket played a major role in England’s rise as a dominant white-ball side. His influence extended beyond his personal run tally, as he helped shape the team’s identity for years to come.

His final international appearance came in the second ODI against the Netherlands in Amstelveen in June 2022. Morgan was dismissed for a duck, following another scoreless innings in the opening ODI of the series. He announced his retirement from international cricket shortly afterwards. Although his final outings were disappointing, Morgan left behind a lasting legacy as the captain who led England to their historic World Cup triumph.
