India pacer Arshdeep Singh produced a moment of brilliance in the opening T20I against New Zealand, combining sharp reflexes with impressive football skills to run out Bevon Jacobs at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday, October 22. The dismissal came during the closing stages of New Zealand’s innings and provided India with a crucial breakthrough as the hosts looked to finish strongly.

While New Zealand’s batters enjoyed an impressive outing with the bat, Arshdeep’s quick thinking and athleticism stood out. The left-arm seamer reacted instantly to a risky single, using his foot to redirect the ball onto the stumps and catch Jacobs short of his ground despite the batter’s desperate dive.

The incident took place on the third delivery of the 18th over, when Arshdeep bowled a well-directed yorker on the off stump to Glenn Phillips. Phillips managed to bring his bat down in time to keep the delivery out. However, Jacobs, positioned at the non-striker’s end, spotted an opportunity for a quick single and immediately set off towards the opposite crease.

The decision carried considerable risk, as the ball remained close to Arshdeep and the fielder had an opportunity to intervene. Jacobs sprinted towards the striker’s end and threw himself forward in an attempt to make his ground.

Arshdeep, however, reacted swiftly. He covered the short distance, reached the ball and kicked it back towards the stumps with remarkable accuracy. The ball struck the wickets while Jacobs’ bat was still airborne, leaving the New Zealand batter short of his ground.

The successful run-out sparked celebrations among the Indian players, who had secured an important wicket through an unusual but highly effective piece of fielding. The moment also showcased Arshdeep’s awareness and composure under pressure. Rather than attempting to gather the ball and throw it conventionally, he improvised brilliantly to complete the dismissal in a split second.

India script record T20I chase to beat New Zealand

Speaking about the contest, India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in a thrilling high-scoring encounter, completing their highest successful run chase in T20I cricket. Chasing a daunting target of 226, the hosts crossed the finish line with two balls remaining to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Batting first, New Zealand piled up 225/4, registering their highest T20I total on home soil. Phillips led the charge with an unbeaten 82 off 40 deliveries, while Finn Allen provided an explosive start with a quickfire 45. India’s bowlers struggled to contain the scoring, with Axar Patel conceding 51 runs for one wicket and Arshdeep finishing with figures of 1/45.

India responded aggressively, racing to 94 runs during the powerplay. Sanju Samson spearheaded the assault with an impressive 67 off just 33 balls, giving the hosts early momentum in their pursuit of the massive target. However, New Zealand fought back through their spinners, Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell, as India lost four wickets for just 29 runs. Captain Shreyas Iyer then steadied the innings with a valuable 42 off 28 deliveries, keeping the chase alive under pressure.

Youngster Naman Dhir delivered the decisive finishing blow, smashing an unbeaten 42 from just 15 balls. He sealed India’s memorable victory in dramatic fashion, striking a top-edged hook shot for six off Matt Henry with two balls to spare.
