Bundesliga outfit 1. FC Köln have officially confirmed the signing of Australian international Paul Okon-Engstler from Sydney FC. The 21-year-old defensive midfielder has signed a long-term contract at the Geißbockheim valid through June 2030. Previous reports placed the transfer fee at approximately €1m.

Okon-Engstler established himself as a regular for Sydney FC during the 2025/26 campaign, making 27 A-League appearances and featuring three more times in the Australian cup. His performances also enabled him to earn a regular place in the senior Australian national team.

Primarily deployed as a No. 6, Okon-Engstler can also operate in a more advanced central-midfield role. His composure in possession and capacity to initiate attacks from deeper areas provide Köln with a different profile in the middle of the park.

Paul Okon-Engstler arrives after World Cup breakthrough

The Oostende-born midfielder arrives in the Bundesliga following an impressive rise over the past year. Okon-Engstler represented Australia in all four of the Socceroos’ matches at the recently concluded World Cup, starting three fixtures.

The new Köln signing possesses extensive experience of European academy football. After beginning his development in Australia, Okon-Engstler joined Club Brugge at the age of 14 before moving to Benfica’s youth setup.

He represented the Portuguese giants in the UEFA Youth League and later featured for Benfica’s reserve side. Okon-Engstler returned to Australia to join Sydney FC last summer, quickly establishing himself at senior level before earning his Bundesliga transfer.

Statements on Okon-Engstler’s signing

Köln managing director Thomas Kessler emphasized both the midfielder’s developmental potential and the mentality he demonstrated during his breakthrough season in Australia.

“We’re very pleased that Paul has decided to join 1. FC Köln,” sporting director Thomas Kessler noted in a club statement. “He’s a young player with great potential who has developed very positively in recent years.

“With his strong performances for Sydney FC, he earned a spot on the Australian national team and proved at the World Cup what kind of role he can play,” Kessler continued. “Paul brings strong footballing skills, high intensity, and a willingness to work on himself every day. This attitude fits very well with our philosophy.”

“We’re convinced that he’ll enhance our central midfield and give our squad additional options,” Kessler concluded. “At the same time, we want to support him as best we can in his development and take the next step together.”

“For me, this is precisely the right step in my professional career,” the player himself added. “FC Köln is a club with a rich history. The stadium and the fans are impressive. I can’t wait to play there and finally take the field with the team.”
