Maximilian Wöber’s move to Schalke 04 came about rapidly, but the Austrian defender views the transfer as a carefully considered opportunity to revive his Bundesliga career.

The 28-year-old received permission to join Schalke’s Austrian training camp at short notice after Leeds United agreed to terminate his contract. Wöber immediately packed his belongings and travelled to Neustift.

“It was stressful,” Wöber told Kicker. “I received the green light relatively spontaneously. The message was: ‘Pack your things and come to training camp.’”

The free transfer enabled Schalke to preserve their limited transfer budget. Wöber initially signed a one-year contract, though a certain number of appearances will reportedly activate an extension option. The agreement is heavily performance-based due to the defender’s recent injury problems.

The defender who once labelled Germany “paradise for a footballer” shall be hoping that his third Bundesliga stint doesn’t turn into his own personal version of “Paradise Lost”.

Maximilian Wöber determined to overcome injury troubles

As noted in previous Get German Football News coverage, Wöber first arrived in Germany on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach during the 2023/24 campaign. The versatile left-footer made 25 Bundesliga appearances and scored twice while featuring centrally and at left-back.

A permanent move proved financially unrealistic. Wöber returned to Germany with Werder Bremen last season, but injuries restricted him to only three appearances.

The Austrian described the period as a “nightmare spell involving plenty of bad luck and one or two poor decisions.”

“I trained throughout the entire holiday and kept myself fit,” Wöber said. “I feel as good as I have in the past two years.”

“I don’t need to be capable of playing 90 minutes tomorrow,” he continued. “Over the next four to six weeks, I want to reach the point where nobody has to question whether I can play 90 minutes or not.”

Wöber nevertheless remains grateful that Schalke have offered him another opportunity.

“I’m extremely thankful for the chance to show that I can establish myself in the Bundesliga,” he said. “I’m approaching the task with a smile.”

Wöber envisions familiar tactical role at Schalke

Wöber is expected to challenge Hasan Kuruçay for the left-sided centre-back role. His natural left foot should prove useful whether Schalke operate with a back three or four.

“In the systems we want to play, having a left foot helps,” Wöber said. “I’m open when it comes to a back three or a back four. I’ve played both very often during my career.”

The tactical philosophy also feels familiar to a player who made 109 appearances for Red Bull Salzburg.

“Defending forward, attacking and then pushing up together—that is what Schalke explained to me during the initial discussions,” Wöber said. “It is comparable to the Red Bull Salzburg philosophy, which I know inside and out.”

Wöber also believes he can provide more than positional versatility and defensive stability.

“I can also be a factor in the locker room,” he said.

The player who arrived spontaneously now has a clear plan: regain full fitness, earn his extension and prove that his Bundesliga career remains far from finished.

Wöber has already greatly assisted his new Bundesliga club by ensuring that there is now enough room on the payroll to sign Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko to a contract extension.

If he remains healthy, the opinion of most German football journalists remains fairly straightforward: Wöber has the potential to be one of the top signings of the 2026/27 Bundesliga campaign.
