India‘s fourth T20I against West Indies at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad produced a significant individual milestone despite a disappointing result for the hosts. The five-match series remained finely poised after the visitors secured a 24-run victory, but India’s young opener Abhishek Sharma found a place in the record books with another maximum. Although he could not deliver a substantial contribution with the bat, the left-hander achieved a remarkable feat that underlined his aggressive approach in the shortest format.
Abhishek Sharma goes past Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is
Abhishek entered the Hyderabad contest after establishing himself as one of India’s most attacking batters in T20 internationals. However, the fourth encounter proved challenging for the opener, who struggled to find his usual rhythm while chasing a formidable target. The left-hander managed 29 runs off 24 deliveries, a relatively subdued innings by his standards. His opening partner, Sanju Samson, was in excellent touch at the other end, scoring rapidly and putting pressure on the West Indies bowling attack.
Abhishek had to wait until his 15th delivery to clear the boundary for the first time. That six, however, proved significant beyond the immediate context of the innings, allowing him to establish a new benchmark among batters representing full-member nations in men’s T20 internationals.
With his solitary six against West Indies, Abhishek took his tally to 69 sixes in T20 internationals during 2026, moving past former India captain Suryakumar Yadav‘s previous record of 68 maximums, which he registered in 2022. Abhishek now holds the record for the most sixes in men’s T20 internationals in a calendar year by a batter from a full-member nation. The achievement reflects his ability to clear the boundary regularly, even during a campaign that has included its share of difficult outings.
His overall numbers in 2026 further demonstrate his importance to India’s batting lineup. Abhishek has scored 950 runs in 33 T20I matches this year at a strike rate exceeding 202, making him India’s second-highest run-scorer in the format during the period. Only Ishan Kishan stands ahead of him on the list, having accumulated 1,128 runs in 33 matches. The two Indian batters currently occupy the top two positions among the leading run-scorers in T20 internationals in 2026.
Expectations high from Abhishek to continue his rich form
Abhishek’s campaign has not been entirely smooth. He endured a below-par T20 World Cup 2026 but has otherwise maintained impressive scoring numbers throughout the year. His performance against West Indies also highlighted the difference between individual milestones and immediate team results. India needed 248 runs to win in Hyderabad, but Abhishek’s 29 could not provide the substantial contribution required to keep the chase on track.
He is currently India’s third-highest run-scorer in the ongoing series against West Indies, with 139 runs across four matches. With the series level at 2-2 following India’s defeat, Abhishek will be looking to rediscover his attacking touch in the deciding encounter. His latest record has reinforced his reputation as a prolific six-hitter, but a decisive contribution in the series finale would be equally valuable for India.
