The FA Cup, Community Shield, and now the UEFA Conference League. Can you ask for anything greater than what Crystal Palace have achieved under Oliver Glasner?
A 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano in the final was the perfect goodbye present for the Austrian, who has given a new lease of life for the Eagles.
After a cagey first half, Glasner’s side really amped up the pressure in the second, particularly when Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the game’s only goal in the 51st minute.
Ismaila Sarr also had a glorious chance to open the scoring late in the first half, where his diving free header drifted wide of the post.
If you were to be ultra-critical, you could say that he should have side-footed the ball into the corner, but luckily it didn’t cost them in the end.
Wharton The Midfield Maestro
Having been seriously unlucky to miss out on England’s World Cup squad, it was Adam Wharton who once again was pulling the strings for The Eagles.
It seems as if he hasn’t let it affect his game at all.
The thing that makes Wharton the player that he is is that his first instinct is to play the ball forward.
Another great thing about him is his composure on the ball. The way he dictated the game in the centre of the pitch was a delight to watch.
You feel as if by not taking him, England could lose a bit of dynamism in their Midfield.
Let’s hope that Tuchel, as stubborn as he is, does not regret it when his team struggles to break down a low block in the heat of North America.
Perfect Send Off
After the game, an jubilant Glasner was delighted about how his side performed in the Final, and what effectively was his last game as the Eagles’ boss.
“I just supported this group of players – I could be the best magician but without the players it wouldn’t work, The players deserve all the credit because they have to trust me and work very hard. They will all tell you I’m very demanding. But they know I want the best for everyone. As soon as everyone understood that we created a fantastic spirit and the supporters now have what they deserve with a spot in the Europa League.”
Glasner: The Guardian
In his 121 matches as the Eagles’ boss, Glasner had a win percentage of 43.8, which is the seventh highest by a Crystal Palace manager.
In 2024-25, the Eagles finished on 49 points under the Austrian. This was their best-ever points tally in the Premier League.
To top it up with an FA Cup against Manchester City, made it an extraordinary season.
Iraola, Frank, And Keane Amongst The Early Favourites
Among the early candidates to replace the 51-year-old are some interesting names in the mix.
Adoni Iraola, who had done wonders at AFC Bournemouth, particularly with guiding them to the Europa League in his third and final season in charge, is the early odds-on favourite for the job.
Thomas Frank, who was superb at Brentford but struggled at Tottenham Hotspur under a difficult environment, is another name being mentioned, as are Robbie Keane and Frank Lampard.
But whoever is in the dugout at Selhurst Park next season, it is important that they try to build on the foundations laid by Glasner and continue to make Palace a competitive side in all competitions.
