Alexander Schwolow has explained why he willingly surrendered his status as a first-choice goalkeeper at Heart of Midlothian to return to the Bundesliga with Mainz 05.

The 34-year-old completed his move to Mainz after helping Hearts finish second in the Scottish Premiership. Although Schwolow arrives wearing the No. 1 shirt, he is expected to begin the campaign behind established club captain Robin Zentner.

For a goalkeeper whose spell in Scotland restored both regular playing time and professional happiness, accepting another backup role appears an unusual sporting decision. Schwolow nevertheless stressed that football was not the determining factor.

Hearts spell restored Schwolow’s love of football

Schwolow moved to Edinburgh last summer after two seasons as Frederik Rønnow’s deputy at Union Berlin. The former Freiburg academy had previously struggled to justify Hertha BSC’s €7m investment and lost his starting place during a loan spell with Schalke.

Get German Football News covered Schwolow’s resurgence in November, when Hearts led the Scottish Premiership and the German had kept five clean sheets from his first seven league starts. He spoke then about surviving several career low points and finally being rewarded for refusing to give up.

Hearts eventually lost the title race to Celtic, but Schwolow described the campaign as “a crazy season” that would remain with him for The fresh environment, Scottish mentality, and restoration of his number-one status brought back the enjoyment that had faded during his difficult final years in Germany.

“The last year really brought the joy back to me,” Schwolow remarked in an interview with Kicker.

His farewell proved emotional despite Hearts exiting Champions League qualifying following two defeats against Sturm Graz.

“Unfortunately, we lost, but many fans stayed behind to thank me and say goodbye again,” Schwolow said. “That was a really beautiful feeling.”

Family needs dictated Mainz transfer

Schwolow still had a Hearts contract through 2027 and acknowledged that leaving was not an easy decision.

“It wasn’t a sporting decision, but a family one,” he explained.

The goalkeeper’s two young children struggled with the language barrier in Scotland. His five-year-old daughter was also due to begin school this summer, convincing the family that remaining abroad was no longer sustainable.

“It became clear that it wouldn’t work,” Schwolow said. “That’s why I had to find a way back into the German-speaking region.”

Schwolow informed Hearts’ sporting director of the situation during the spring. The Scottish club ultimately agreed to release him, while Mainz allowed him to complete both Champions League qualifying fixtures before reporting to Urs Fischer’s preseason camp.

“That could have been made considerably more difficult, so I’m very grateful to the club,” Schwolow said. “I’m equally grateful to Mainz for allowing me to play the two Champions League qualifiers until Hearts had a replacement.”

Schwolow prepared to support Robin Zentner

Schwolow returns with 206 Bundesliga appearances accumulated across spells with Freiburg, Hertha, Schalke, and Union. His role at Mainz will differ sharply from the one he enjoyed in Edinburgh, but the veteran believes his experience will help him manage the adjustment.

“At 34, it is definitely easier to accept roles,” he said. “I remain ambitious and want to prove myself at the highest level, either by earning playing time or applying maximum pressure on Robin. In the end, however, it is about what is best for the club.”

Fischer also influenced the decision. Schwolow did not make a competitive appearance under the Swiss coach at Union, yet described their relationship as one of considerable mutual respect.

“He was certainly an additional argument for joining Mainz because I know how he works,” Schwolow said. “Very precisely, very honestly, and also very hard. Those are qualities I appreciate.”

The move may represent a sporting step backward, but Schwolow’s priorities are clear. After rediscovering himself in Scotland, he has chosen family stability over guaranteed minutes.
