Why the Las Vegas Grand Prix has earned a 10-year extension

Las Vegas has made quite the impression since returning to the Formula 1 calendar in 2023 – and it’s set to become a cornerstone for the sport in the United States after signing a 10-year extension…

Wow, that’s a big deal!

You bet it is. The new contract means Formula 1 cars will be racing around the streets of the sports and entertainment capital of the world through to 2037. Such a long deal gives the race stability, which in turn allows the organisers to continue to invest in the overall event facility and fan experience.

How successful has the event been so far?

The Las Vegas Grand Prix has delivered $3.2 billion in cumulative economic impact for Southern Nevada, with all three races from 2023 to 2025 selling out.

The 2025 race alone generated $43 million in state and local tax revenue while the Las Vegas Grand Prix Foundation has contributed more than $2 million to nonprofit organisations.

What has F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali said about the news?

“We are thrilled that Formula 1 will continue racing in Las Vegas for many years to come,” he said. “Since its debut in 2023, the event has been extraordinary, rapidly establishing itself as a premier destination for great racing, world-class entertainment, global business leaders, A-list celebrities and influencers.

“It has delivered a strong and lasting impact on the local economy and community. We always believed that Las Vegas would become a cornerstone of our presence in the United States, and this extension, together with the success of recent years, reinforces our long-term commitment to this important market.”

Fair enough about the racing – it’s been pretty damn good in the three races so far…

You’re not wrong. We’d go as far as to say the racing has been exceptional. The track has some pretty long straights – including a 2km stretch down the famous strip – and heavy braking zones which means several good overtaking spots.

The cooler conditions have made things interesting, too…

Ah yes. As a night race, the temperatures at that time of year in November in Nevada are on the cooler side so that makes tyre warm up interest and leaves grip at a premium.

Remind me, who won last year?

That would be a certain Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver’s triumph, coupled with a double disqualification for McLaren, saw him move level with Oscar Piastri and close to within 24 points of Lando Norris in the fight for the drivers’ title.

Who else has won in Vegas?

Verstappen won the first edition back in 2023, while George Russell claimed victory in 2024. That latter event was wild as it featured an impressive 113 overtakes and saw Verstappen claim his fourth successive world title.

I’m already looking forward to the next one. When is it?

That’ll be in November, with the first two practice sessions on the 19th, FP3 and Qualifying following on the 20th and the Grand Prix taking place on the 21st. You can book your tickets here.
