Buying new golf equipment can be an exciting process, but it can also be overwhelming. Modern golf club ranges are stacked with different models that promise various types of performance gains.
Tokomo’s line-up is no exception to this.
Over the past few years, the Finnish brand has positioned itself as a highly commendable alternative to the more established golf brands. They have done so by, in part, offering premium clubs at prices significantly lower than their more household known competitors.
But while the value-for-money is easy to understand, choosing the right Takomo club is not always quite so straightforward.
The reality is that no singular model is right for everyone. It’s not recommended that beginners go about using a set of blade irons, for example.
With that in mind, we’ve taken a closer look at Takomo’s key products and identified the golfers who are most likely to benefit from their various irons and wedges.
High Handicappers
If you’re a higher handicap golfer, the chances are you may be new to the game. Or at the very least, an inconsistent ball striker. And that’s okay, no judging here. We all start somewhere.
If you are one, or both, of those things then gaming a set of irons that are going to promote more consistency and are objectively easier to hit, should be at the top of your checklist.
The Takomo 101 MKII irons are those clubs.
Designed as the most forgiving iron in the brand’s line-up, it prioritises ease of use over shot-shaping ability, helping golfers achieve more reliable results across the face.
Our chief equipment reviewer and professional golfer, Nicola Slater, praised the brand for responding to feedback from golfers when constructing these irons. Not only in terms of technology but with what golfers really want from a set of irons.
Previously this is a set that came as a four-iron through to a pitching wedge, but as a game improvement set that longer club wasn’t really needed. Hence they just go up to a five-iron now.
From a technical standpoint, the face features variable- thickness 17-4 stainless steel. This is designed to make it more explosive, creating a buttery type feel at impact.
Mid Handicappers
Without meaning to point out the obvious, this is the middle ground for those who have moved on from beginner status in their potential quest to scratch.
The Takomo 201 MKII irons strike the best balance between the two levels. Ultimately, they are designed to be the pure players distance iron out of the three models from their 2026 release.
Compared to the more distance friendly 101 MKII irons, these feature a shorter blade length and a trimmed down topline. In truth, there is very little variation in sole thickest but over the ball you can see the 201T MKII has a more tour-inspired design with a smaller, sharper look.
Being a players distance iron it’s all about power and distance. But, as a club designed for a wide range of handicapped golfers, it needs to provide some forgiveness with mishits. Hence the inclusion of a variable face thickness to support off-centre strikes.
If you find yourself transitioning from game improvement irons to something with a little more feel and less chunky, Slater believes they are the perfect option. Not to mention, they’re less than £600.
Low Handicappers
Confidence can be hard to find to when stood over a ball with a golf club in hand in the best of times. But for those talented ball strikers out there, I suppose you don’t feel the same sort of anxiety as the rest of us.
Therefore, a set of irons that promotes a little more precision is probably preferable.
The Takomo 201T MKII Irons are a cross between a traditional players’ cavity-back and a players’ distance iron. They offer this increased control without sacrificing playability and forgiveness completely.
The 101 MKII and 201 MKII look very similar in terms of sole width but with the 201T MKII you can definitely see a size difference – the most blade looking of the three. A fun fact for you, these are actually the first of their kind. A hollow-body iron in the form of a players’ iron.
Slater noted they offered plenty of distance with a strong amount of workability, great for players who love to shape the ball. Further claiming, what we have here are a great set of irons that those of you who aren’t brave enough to take on a blade but want to look at a smaller profile iron can comfortable put in play.
For anyone and everyone
Things are a little different when it comes to short game clubs. Generally, it’s not so much about what is appropriate for various levels of golfers per se, but what feels the best for them.
Takomo offer two different wedge models; the Skyforger and the Skyforger SF002. Both offer versatility that can benefit virtually every golfer.
The standard model looks to promote a soft feel and enough spin for better control around, and indeed on, the greens. The precision-milled grooves and micro-milling in-between grooves help to deliver this.
Additionally, there is a greater focus on having a more accomplished influence over the trajectory and ball flight.
Takomo’s Skyforger SF002, on the other hand, is all about versatility.
