After an entertaining five-match T20I series, New Zealand and India are set to renew their rivalry in the 50-over format, with the first ODI scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at Eden Park in Auckland. The upcoming five-match series promises another exciting contest between two competitive sides, with India looking to continue their winning momentum and New Zealand hoping to make the most of home conditions.
India enter the ODI leg having secured a 3-2 victory in the recently concluded T20I series. However, the Black Caps finished the shorter-format contest strongly, winning the final two matches after losing the opening three. With several experienced players returning and both teams making significant squad changes, the ODI series presents a fresh challenge for the visitors and hosts alike.
India look to build on T20I series win as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return
India will be confident heading into the ODI series, particularly after their success in the T20I leg. However, the visitors will have a different-looking batting lineup, with senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning to the spotlight.
Shubman Gill will captain India in the opening three ODIs, while Shreyas Iyer is scheduled to take over the leadership responsibilities for the final two matches. KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan provide additional batting options, while Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy strengthen the all-round department.
India’s bowling attack includes Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav and several emerging fast bowlers looking to establish themselves at the international level.
However, India have suffered a setback with Prasidh Krishna ruled out of the entire ODI series due to a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, Reddy will be available only for the opening ODI before joining India A for their final four-day match against New Zealand A.
New Zealand face injury concerns despite strong T20I finish
New Zealand will be determined to bounce back from their T20I series defeat, especially after winning the fourth and fifth matches. Glenn Phillips was one of the standout performers in the T20I leg, scoring a record-breaking 341 runs across the five matches. Tim Seifert also impressed in the final encounter, smashing 93 runs to help New Zealand secure a seven-wicket victory in Hamilton. However, injuries have complicated New Zealand’s preparations for the ODI series.
Rachin Ravindra has been ruled out due to a shoulder injury, while Mark Chapman remains unavailable because of a hamstring problem. Henry Nicholls has been drafted into the squad for the first three ODIs, while Tim Seifert and Matt Fisher have received expanded roles in the series. Matt Henry‘s fitness has also been under scrutiny following a quadriceps injury during the T20I series.
The hosts have suffered another setback ahead of the series opener, with Devon Conway ruled out of the first ODI after suffering a concussion during a training-session collision with Henry at Eden Park on Tuesday. The series provides both teams with an important opportunity to assess their combinations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
