Liverpool and Chelsea have reportedly been linked with a move for Brentford defender El Hadji Malick Diouf, as per TEAMtalk.
After being impressed by the 21-year-old’s performances for Slavia Praha, West Ham United decided to purchase him last year. Although he failed to help the Hammers avoid relegation, he showed glimpses of his qualities in his debut Premier League campaign.
In 32 Premier League appearances, the youngster registered five assists and kept six clean sheets. Brentford opted to strengthen the left-back position by purchasing him last summer.
However, Diouf has mainly featured as a rotational option at the Gtech Community Stadium thus far this season. Still, he has continued to be a key player for the Senegal national team.
Now, TEAMtalk state that Liverpool and Chelsea have been linked with a move for Diouf, but Brentford have no intention of parting ways with him, having recently purchased him.
The Senegal international, valued at around £29m by Transfermarkt, still has a contract until 2031 and Brentford have an option to extend his deal for a year further.
Diouf is a left-back by trait but is also comfortable in the LWB position. He is quick, strong, can deliver excellent crosses from the flank and is efficient in defensive contributions.
Battle
Following Andrew Robertson’s departure last summer, Liverpool currently have Milos Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas as left-back options. However, the Hungarian has struggled to showcase his best at Anfield thus far.
On the other hand, Tsimikas has entered the final year of his current contract. So, it appears the Merseyside club are exploring the possibility of signing a new left-back.
On the other hand, Chelsea currently don’t have a natural left-wing-back, with Xabi Alonso deploying a back three system. As a result, the Spanish boss seemingly wants to upgrade this area.
Diouf is a talented player and possesses high potential. Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Chelsea or Liverpool should either club purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Merseyside club or the West London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure the African’s services in January or next summer.
