The Joburg Super Kings have strengthened their coaching setup ahead of the SA20 2027 season as the franchise looks to challenge for its maiden title. The appointment comes as the team prepares for a fresh campaign under a new head coach following a change in leadership after the previous season. With several notable additions to their squad at the recent auction, the franchise is working to build a combination capable of competing consistently for the championship.
Joburg Super Kings appoint South African icon as bowling coach
Former South Africa fast bowler Allan Donald has been appointed as the bowling coach of Joburg Super Kings, the franchise confirmed on Tuesday, October 13. The 59-year-old will work alongside Albie Morkel, who has taken charge as head coach after Stephen Fleming stepped down following the 2026 season.
Donald brings extensive international and franchise coaching experience to the Super Kings setup. His appointment is expected to add considerable expertise to the team’s bowling department, particularly as the franchise looks to improve its performances and pursue its first SA20 title.
His coaching career began in 2007 when he worked as a temporary bowling consultant with the England cricket team. He subsequently joined Warwickshire in 2008 before taking up the bowling coach position with New Zealand during the 2011 ODI World Cup.
Later that year, Donald became South Africa’s bowling coach under Gary Kirsten. He remained in the position until the 2015 World Cup, gaining valuable experience working with the country’s leading fast bowlers at the international level.
Legendary pacer brings IPL and international coaching experience
Beyond international cricket, Donald has also worked extensively in franchise competitions. His coaching assignments have included the Indian Premier League, where he served as a bowling coach for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He later joined Pune Warriors India in 2012 as a bowling coach before being promoted to head coach the following season. The experience provided him with an opportunity to take on greater responsibility in managing a franchise team and working across different aspects of its cricketing operations.
Donald also coached Kent before moving into international coaching duties with Bangladesh. He served as the team’s pace bowling coach and continued in that role until the 2022 T20 World Cup.
His varied background across international teams, domestic cricket and franchise competitions gives Joburg Super Kings an experienced addition to their support staff. Working alongside Morkel, Donald will be responsible for helping the team’s bowlers prepare for the demands of the SA20 competition.
The coaching appointments represent an important change for the franchise as it enters a new phase following Fleming’s departure. The combination of Morkel’s leadership and Donald’s specialist knowledge will form part of the team’s preparations for the upcoming season.

Joburg Super Kings will enter the 2027 campaign aiming to turn their squad-building efforts into a successful title challenge. The franchise made several notable acquisitions at the recent auction, bringing in experienced international cricketers alongside other additions.
Among the players signed were former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, Jason Rowles, Dayyan Galiem, West Indies star Kieron Pollard, Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani and Andries Gous.
