West Indies Women began their ODI series against Zimbabwe Women in commanding fashion, producing a dominant performance in the opening game. At the centre of their victory was captain Hayley Matthews, who delivered a remarkable batting display that combined control, aggression and consistency. Her extraordinary innings not only laid the foundation for a massive West Indies total but also earned her a place among the highest individual scorers in Women’s ODI cricket.

Hayley Matthews creates history for West Indies

Matthews produced a career-defining performance with a breathtaking 182 off 156 deliveries, taking apart the Zimbabwe bowling attack with a wide range of strokes. Her innings contained 26 fours and two sixes, highlighting the balance between her ability to find gaps and clear the boundary when required. The knock also saw Matthews create a new record for West Indies Women. Her 182 became the highest individual score by a West Indies batter in Women’s ODIs, taking her beyond the previous benchmark and further establishing her place in the team’s batting history.

What made the performance particularly significant was the level at which it ranked globally. Matthews’ score stands as the sixth-highest individual score in the history of Women’s ODIs. Among captains, it is the fourth-highest individual score, adding another notable achievement to an already outstanding innings. The West Indies skipper’s approach was crucial to the team’s dominance. Rather than relying solely on boundary hitting, Matthews initially focused on rotating the strike and building the innings before gradually increasing the tempo.

Top 3 highest individual scores for West Indies Women in ODIs

  • Hayley Matthews: 182 runs
  • Stafanie Taylor: 171 runs
  • Hayley Matthews: 141 runs

That calculated approach allowed her to remain at the crease for a substantial period while putting increasing pressure on Zimbabwe’s bowlers. Once established, Matthews was able to attack with greater freedom, finding the boundary regularly and ensuring the momentum remained firmly with the visitors. Her 26 boundaries formed the bulk of her scoring, while the two sixes underlined the power she possesses when taking on the bowling. The innings eventually developed into a commanding individual contribution that gave West Indies a platform to post a formidable total.

Record knock sets up West Indies’ dominant victory

Matthews’ historic, record-breaking knock of 182 runs off 156 balls propelled the West Indies Women to a commanding 99-run victory over Zimbabwe in the first ODI. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors posted an imposing total of 299/6 in their 50 overs, heavily built on a 128-run opening partnership between Matthews and Realeanna Grimmond (53).

In response, Zimbabwe’s chase never truly gathered enough momentum despite a resilient, top-scoring effort of 86 from opener Modester Mupachikwa. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 200 in 43.3 overs as the West Indies bowling attack, spearheaded by Aaliyah Alleyne’s clinical spell of 3 for 44, locked down the comprehensive win to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
