The race for the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 title enters its business end as table-toppers Jaffna Kings (JK) take on second-placed Galle Gallants (GG) in Qualifier 1 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday, August 5. With a direct berth in the final at stake, both teams will be eager to capitalize on the opportunity and avoid the extra hurdle of Qualifier 2.

Jaffna Kings have been the standout side during the league phase, finishing at the summit of the points table. Led by Bhanuka Rajapaksa, they have consistently delivered with both bat and ball throughout the tournament. Their previous fixture against Dambulla Sixers (DS) was washed out due to rain, but before that they registered a convincing 21-run victory over Kandy Royals (KR). Kamil Mishara has been their leading run-scorer with 262 runs, while Lizaad Williams has spearheaded the bowling attack with 14 wickets.

Meanwhile, Galle Gallants head into the knockout clash after securing second place in the standings. They defeated Colombo Kaps (CK) by 13 runs in their final league fixture, thanks to a captain’s knock from Charith Asalanka and another solid all-round bowling display. Sam Harper has enjoyed an excellent campaign with 303 runs, while Eshan Malinga has been the team’s leading wicket-taker with 13 scalps. Having carried strong momentum into the playoffs, the Gallants will be confident of challenging the table-toppers.

R. Premadasa Stadium Pitch Report

The R. Premadasa Stadium has traditionally offered balanced conditions, providing assistance to both batters and bowlers at different stages of the game. The new ball is expected to assist the seamers early on, especially if they maintain disciplined lines and lengths. Batters who survive the initial phase are likely to find good value for their shots as the innings progresses.

As the match wears on, the surface generally slows down and begins to assist the spinners, making stroke-making increasingly difficult in the middle overs. Teams with quality spin options could enjoy a significant advantage, particularly while defending totals under lights.
Considering the conditions and the possibility of dew in the evening, captains may prefer to bowl first after winning the toss. A first-innings total in the region of 165-180 should prove competitive.
