The road to regional supremacy begins again this fall as Concacaf officially launches the fifth edition of the Concacaf Nations League, with an expanded and refreshed format promising higher stakes, more meaningful international fixtures, and greater opportunities for emerging football nations across North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

The tournament will be contested during the FIFA Match Windows of September-October and November 2026 before reaching its climax in March 2027, when the Confederation crowns not only its League A champion but also, for the first time, centralized champions for Leagues B and C. The new structure represents another important step in Concacaf’s continued effort to increase competitive balance while providing national teams with consistent, high-quality matches outside of World Cup qualifying.

With the excitement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup still fresh across the region, attention now shifts toward another prestigious competition that has steadily grown in importance since its inaugural edition in 2019.

A proven formula continues to evolve

Since replacing many traditional international friendlies, the Concacaf Nations League has transformed the competitive landscape for member associations. Instead of sporadic exhibition matches, teams now compete in meaningful fixtures that influence rankings, promotion and relegation, and qualification for future tournaments.

The fifth edition maintains its familiar three-tier league system while introducing refinements designed to reward consistency and create more compelling matchups. The competition remains divided into League A, League B, and League C, with teams distributed according to the results from the previous Nations League campaign and the tournament’s promotion and relegation system. Every match carries significance, whether teams are chasing the regional title, fighting for promotion, or battling to avoid relegation.

League A takes center stage

League A once again serves as the premier division of the competition and will feature 16 of Concacaf’s strongest national teams. The biggest change comes in the Group Stage, where the 12 lowest-ranked League A nations, according to the latest Concacaf Rankings, will compete in a Swiss-style format before the tournament reaches the knockout rounds. The 12 teams have been divided into two groups of six, with each nation playing four matches—two at home and two away—during the September and October FIFA international window.

Group A

  • Costa Rica
  • Haiti
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Curaçao
  • Nicaragua
  • Dominican Republic

Group B

  • Honduras
  • Jamaica
  • Guatemala
  • Suriname
  • Martinique
  • El Salvador

The format ensures every fixture carries considerable importance. Rather than lengthy group campaigns, each nation has only four matches to secure one of two qualifying places for the Quarterfinals.

Four giants await

While 12 nations battle through the Group Stage, the region’s four highest-ranked teams have already secured automatic places in the Quarterfinals.

Those teams are:

  • Mexico (1)
  • United States (2)
  • Canada (3)
  • Panama (4)

Their direct qualification reflects both their recent performances and their positions atop the Concacaf Rankings. It also creates an intriguing dynamic. The elite quartet enjoys additional preparation time while the remaining contenders must survive a demanding group campaign before earning the right to challenge the region’s heavyweights. The Quarterfinals, scheduled for the November FIFA Match Window, promise several blockbuster encounters as the Group Stage qualifiers attempt to upset the continent’s established powers.

Jamaica headlines competitive Group B

Among the most fascinating storylines entering the tournament is Jamaica’s quest to return to the Nations League Finals. Drawn alongside Honduras, Guatemala, Suriname, Martinique, and El Salvador, the Reggae Boyz face a challenging route to the knockout rounds. Jamaica possesses one of the region’s deepest player pools, combining experienced internationals competing in Europe’s top leagues with an emerging generation eager to establish themselves following the World Cup cycle.

However, there will be little margin for error. Honduras remains one of Central America’s traditional football powers, Guatemala has enjoyed steady improvement over recent years, while Suriname continues to benefit from recruiting dual-national talent competing in Europe. Even Martinique and El Salvador have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to produce surprise results in regional competition. With only two qualification spots available, consistency across all four matches will be essential.

Costa Rica leads balanced Group A

Group A appears equally competitive despite Costa Rica entering as the highest-profile nation. Los Ticos will be expected to challenge for top spot, but Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Curaçao, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic each have legitimate ambitions of reaching the Quarterfinals.

Haiti continues to produce technically gifted players capable of troubling any opponent. Curaçao has steadily strengthened through investment in dual-national recruitment. Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic have made significant strides in recent years, narrowing the gap on the region’s traditional football powers.

Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago remains one of Concacaf’s historic football nations and will be eager to re-establish itself among the region’s elite. Few matches in Group A are likely to feature clear favorites.

More than just a trophy

The Nations League has become far more than another international tournament. For many member associations, it provides structured competition that accelerates player development, offers valuable FIFA Ranking points, and serves as an important measuring stick ahead of major tournaments. The competitive environment has also reduced reliance on friendlies, which often lacked intensity or long-term significance.

Instead, every international window now presents meaningful objectives for coaches and players alike. The promotion and relegation system has further increased competitiveness throughout all three leagues, ensuring even nations outside the traditional regional powers have realistic goals to pursue.

Historic finals weekend ahead

One of the biggest innovations for this edition arrives in March 2027. For the first time, Concacaf will stage centralized championship events for Leagues B and C alongside the League A Finals. Previously, much of the attention focused exclusively on the League A champion.

The new format ensures every league concludes with a showcase event, giving additional recognition to nations competing throughout the Confederation while creating a festival atmosphere celebrating football across the entire region. It also reflects Concacaf’s commitment to raising the profile of every member association rather than concentrating solely on its biggest markets.

Eyes on March 2027

As September approaches, anticipation continues to build. Mexico enters as one of the favorites alongside the United States, Canada, and Panama, but recent editions have demonstrated that the competitive gap across Concacaf continues to narrow. Jamaica, Costa Rica, Honduras, Haiti, Guatemala, and several emerging nations all possess the talent to challenge expectations over the coming months.

With only four Group Stage matches separating several teams from the Quarterfinals, every goal, every point, and every home fixture could ultimately determine who advances. The fifth edition of the Concacaf Nations League promises another compelling chapter in the region’s football evolution.

Featuring a revamped structure, meaningful competition at every level, and the introduction of centralized championship events across all three leagues, the tournament continues to strengthen international football throughout Concacaf. As the journey toward the March 2027 Finals begins, the stage is set for six months of intense rivalries, breakthrough performances, and unforgettable moments that will shape the future of the region’s game.
