The 2026 Commonwealth Games are underway in Glasgow after an opening ceremony at The Hydro officially began 11 days of international sport.

King Charles III declared the Games open on Thursday, 23 July, following a ceremony built around Scottish culture, music and Glasgow’s sporting identity. Around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories are competing for 215 gold medals across 10 sports and six integrated Para sports.

The first competitive action followed on Friday, 24 July, with medals awarded in Para powerlifting and swimming alongside the opening sessions of artistic gymnastics, boxing, bowls and 3×3 basketball.

For a broader overview of the dates, format and spectator information, visit World in Sport’s Commonwealth Games 2026 guide.

What is the latest Commonwealth Games 2026 update?

England’s Mark Swan won the first gold medal of Glasgow 2026 in the men’s lightweight Para powerlifting competition.

Swan recorded a personal-best lift of 222kg and finished level with Nigeria’s Roland Ezuruike on 153.9 points. Organisers awarded Swan the title through the competition’s bodyweight coefficient after both lifters failed their final attempts.

Scotland then celebrated a home gold at Tollcross International Swimming Centre. Duncan Scott won the men’s 200m individual medley in 1:56.38, breaking the Commonwealth Games record and securing Scotland’s first title of the event.

Nigeria also made a powerful start in Para powerlifting. Esther Nworgu won the women’s lightweight event with a Games record score of 119 points, while Esther Oyema took silver.

The medal table will change quickly as the programme develops. Fans can follow session times and results through the official Glasgow 2026 schedule.

Key detail Glasgow 2026 position What it means
Dates 23 July to 2 August 2026 Ten days of competition following the opening ceremony
Host city Glasgow, Scotland The city is hosting for the second time after Glasgow 2014
Athletes Around 3,000 Competitors represent 74 nations and territories
Sports 10 A smaller programme concentrated around established venues
Para sports Six integrated sports The programme contains a record 47 Para sport medal events
Medal events 215 More than 1,000 individual medals can be awarded
Main venues Four venue clusters All competition takes place within an eight-mile corridor

Glasgow 2026 features the largest integrated Para sport programme in Commonwealth Games history. It also includes the largest swimming and track cycling programmes staged at the event.

Why is Glasgow 2026 smaller than previous Games?

Glasgow stepped in after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as host in July 2023 amid concerns about escalating costs.

Commonwealth Sport officially confirmed Glasgow as the replacement host in October 2024, leaving organisers with less than two years to prepare the event.

That short timetable helped shape a leaner model. Glasgow 2026 has a streamlined budget of around £150 million, compared with the £778 million allocated to Birmingham 2022. The core delivery model does not rely on direct public funding, although governments have provided limited contingency and infrastructure support.

Organisers have reduced costs by using existing venues, limiting the number of sports and keeping competition within a concentrated section of the city. There is no newly built athletes’ village, while road events and sports requiring additional temporary venues were left out.

The result is a Commonwealth Games that looks noticeably different from Birmingham 2022. However, the tighter programme should make it easier for spectators to move between sports and follow several medal events on the same day.

Which sports are included at Glasgow 2026?

The programme includes artistic gymnastics, athletics, bowls, boxing, track cycling, judo, netball, swimming, weightlifting and 3×3 basketball.

Para competition is integrated into athletics, swimming, track cycling, bowls, powerlifting and wheelchair basketball. The Games will stage 47 Para medal events, the highest total in Commonwealth Games history.

Fans can find a breakdown of every discipline in the full Glasgow 2026 sports list.

Several familiar sports are missing, including badminton, hockey, rugby sevens, squash, table tennis, triathlon and wrestling. Their absence reflects venue availability and the decision to control operating, transport and security costs rather than a permanent change to future Commonwealth Games programmes.

Athletics and swimming remain the two compulsory sports. The athletics programme also brings back the Commonwealth Mile for the first time since 1966.

Follow World in Sport’s athletics coverage and boxing news throughout the Games.

Where are the Commonwealth Games taking place?

Glasgow 2026 uses four established venue clusters. Each hosted major competition before the Games, reducing the need for expensive temporary construction.

Venue Sports Competition dates
Tollcross International Swimming Centre Swimming and Para swimming 24 to 29 July
Scotstoun Stadium Athletics and Para athletics 27 July to 1 August
Glasgow International Arena Artistic gymnastics, track cycling and Para track cycling 24 July to 2 August
SEC Centre Boxing, judo, bowls, Para bowls, 3×3 basketball and wheelchair basketball 24 July to 2 August
SEC Armadillo Weightlifting and Para powerlifting 24 to 30 July
The Hydro Netball and ceremonies 23 July to 2 August

Tollcross hosts 56 swimming and Para swimming medal events. Scotstoun stages 59 athletics and Para athletics events, while Glasgow International Arena hosts artistic gymnastics and the track cycling programme.

The SEC is the busiest cluster. Its halls and arenas accommodate netball, boxing, judo, bowls, basketball, weightlifting and Para powerlifting.

How can UK fans watch Glasgow 2026?

TNT Sports is providing the main live coverage in the United Kingdom, with around 600 hours available across its channels.

Every medal event will be shown live through TNT Sports and HBO Max. Access is included across HBO Max subscription levels, with the Basic with Ads plan starting at £4.99 per month.

Broadcaster 5 is the exclusive English-language free-to-air highlights partner. It will show extended highlights each day, providing an option for viewers without a TNT Sports or HBO Max subscription.

Schedules may change as events progress, particularly when knockout rounds and qualification sessions finish later than expected. Fans should check the latest listings before each session.

Are Commonwealth Games tickets still available?

Tickets remain on sale for selected sports and sessions, although availability varies by venue and date.

Adult tickets started at £17 for non-medal sessions and £26 for medal sessions. Concession prices began at £12. Higher-demand sessions, finals and ceremonies cost more.

Glasgow is also running a free Game On live site at Kelvingrove Park throughout the Games. The area includes live screenings, sports activities, performances and family entertainment.

Spectators travelling to the SEC should expect busier trains, roads and walking routes, particularly around the start and finish of sessions. Organisers recommend using public transport and arriving early.

What should fans watch next?

Swimming remains one of the early focal points, with finals continuing at Tollcross until Wednesday, 29 July. Artistic gymnastics runs until Tuesday, 28 July, while the 3×3 basketball and wheelchair basketball medals will be decided on Wednesday, 29 July.

Athletics begins at Scotstoun on Monday, 27 July. Track cycling starts on Thursday, 30 July, before judo joins the programme on Friday, 31 July.

Netball runs through to the final day on Sunday, 2 August. Boxing concludes on Saturday, 1 August, with the closing ceremony taking place at The Hydro the following evening.

Australia entered Glasgow as the leading nation from Birmingham 2022, where they won 67 gold medals. England, Canada, India, New Zealand and hosts Scotland will also expect to challenge strongly as more events reach their medal stages.

However, the opening day has already shown that the compact format will not reduce the range of stories. England secured the first gold, Scotland celebrated a record-breaking home victory, and Nigeria made an immediate impact in Para powerlifting.

Glasgow 2026 now has an opportunity to prove that a smaller Commonwealth Games can still deliver competitive sport, strong crowds and meaningful international exposure.
