It was a difficult decision whether the NCG Top 100s European Resorts list should include venues where either the golf course or the resort accommodation was currently closed.
In the end, we made the decision to only feature those places where it is currently possible to both stay and play.
This has meant that a small number of exceptional resorts are not included as they are undergoing extensive renovation projects that have involved the temporary closure of either the hotel or the course.
We are following developments closely and look forward to experiencing these resorts anew in the near future, when we are sure they will be rising up the rankings.
Here are some of the ones to watch out for in 2027.
La Bagnaia
La Bagnaia Resort is undergoing some seismic changes. Although the golf course at Royal Golf La Bagnaia remains fully operational, the hotel is closed for a massive multi-euro renovation and rebranding project.
The resort accommodation, which is beautifully integrated into converted medieval hamlets (Borgo La Bagnaia and Borgo La Filetta) will undergo complete re-shaping and modernisation, along with the hotel wellness spaces, to deliver an ultra-luxury experience, bringing La Bagnaia in-line with other luxury Tuscan resorts including Castelfalfi and Castiglion del Bosco.
Tróia
No. 34 on last year’s list, the Tróia golf course on Portugal’s Golden Coast, just south of Lisbon, is currently undergoing an extensive renovation programme and is scheduled to remain closed until March 2027.
While the gates are shut, the aim is to restore the course’s natural character, including rebuilding all 18 greens using a native sand mix and re-shaping the dunescape. The Robert Trent Jones Snr course opened in 1980, and the restoration project is being carried out, very neatly, by RTJ II, the golf architecture company owned by Jones’ son.
Beyond the course, the clubhouse is undergoing a complete transformation to upgrade its facilities, and substantial funding is going into the surrounding ecosystem, including upgrades to the local beach club and the resort’s hotel infrastructure.
The ambition is to create a new golf hub on the Golden Coast where visitors can stay at Tróia, and play other world-class golf courses, including Pinheirinho and the Dunas and Torre courses at nearby Terras de Comporta.
I predict a high re-entry for this sand-and-pines joy in next year’s list.

Oitavos Dunes
The Oitavos Dunes golf course in Cascais, north of Lisbon, has been confirmed as the host venue for the Open de Portugal on the DP World Tour from 2027-2029.
The hotel attached to this top-ranking course, formerly called The Oitavos, is currently wrapping up a lengthy closure and is scheduled to fully reopen in 2027 as the Fasano Hotel Cascais, marking the luxury Brazilian brand’s first launch in Portugal.
The new hotel will use the footprint and bones of the old property but shake it up with organic local materials like natural stone, warm wood and artisanal ceramics.

Castelfalfi
The most significant news from this beautiful Tuscan resort, which came in at no. 41 last year, is the closure of the Castelfalfi Golf Club. The resort is rolling out an extensive and ambitious course redesign throughout 2026 and 2027, led by Tom Fazio.
Alongside the course work is a master plan launched in late 2025 by CEO Mounir Husseini. The project will expand the resort’s residential footprint and includes converting some of the traditional Tuscan country houses (casali) scattered across the estate into elegant, upscale private residences.
Construction is also underway for entirely new luxury villas and dedicated long-stay holiday rentals. Castelfalfi is also developing its agricultural estate to directly supply its restaurants with zero-kilometre organic ingredients.

Le Kempferhof
While the 18-hole Robert von Hagge championship course remains open for play at this classy venue, near Strasbourg in Alsace, the resort hotel itself is deep into a 60-million-euro transformation.
The resort’s iconic 19th-century castle is being meticulously preserved, plus a brand-new hotel wing is being built along with a new spa facility with multiple indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
Finally, the club is constructing a highly innovative golf academy to support its top-tier training programmes, including an architecturally-striking academy building alongside a Trackman driving range and huge short game area.
