In a move that could redefine the international cricket calendar, Cricket Australia (CA) has signaled a surprising willingness to break away from over a century of tradition by considering India as a future host for an Ashes Test series against England.
While the concept remains in its infancy, the mere open-mindedness from cricket executives marks a massive shift in how the sport’s most sacred bilateral contest is viewed in the commercial era.
Cricket Australia’s bold vision for a neutral venue
The cricketing world took notice following recent comments from Australian Cricketers’ Association Chief Executive Todd Greenberg. Speaking on the BBC’s Stumped podcast, Greenberg openly refused to rule out the possibility of taking an Australia-England Test match to Indian soil. The rationale behind the idea is purely strategic: capturing the attention of the world’s largest cricket-consuming audience. By staging the iconic series in front of passionate Indian crowds, both boards could unlock unprecedented broadcast numbers, commercial partnerships, and global engagement.
“We’d have to be open to consider all options. Our relationship with the ECB but also the BCCI is very strong. And clearly, there are opportunities in India to put more content into certain areas. That’s not something we are currently planning, but it would be certainly open for consideration,” said Greenberg.
The logistical hurdles in organising The Ashes in India
While the financial allure is undeniable, transitioning this conceptual idea into a live match requires clearing several massive administrative and logistical hurdles.
- The three-board consensus: Cricket Australia cannot act alone. For a neutral Ashes to happen, it requires a tripartite agreement and formal signatures from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
- The calendar crunch: The international cricket schedule is already packed to capacity. Finding a vacant month that does not clash with India’s own international home season, the Indian Premier League (IPL), or pre-existing ICC tournaments presents a massive scheduling puzzle.
- Preserving tradition: The Ashes has relied on the distinct contrast of English and Australian playing conditions since 1882. Moving the games to the spinning, subcontinent tracks of India would fundamentally alter the tactical nature of the historic rivalry—a move that purists may fiercely resist.
Fans of traditional Test cricket do not need to worry about immediate disruptions to the classic format. Cricket Australia has explicitly clarified that there are no active, near-future plans to move the series, and the traditional alternating home-and-away cycle remains firmly locked in place for the remainder of the decade.
The most recent 2025–26 series concluded on Australian soil with the hosts securing a dominant 4–1 victory.
