3 overseas players Mumbai Indians (MI) can release ahead of IPL 2027 mini-auction

With the November 17 deadline approaching for franchises to finalise their retention and release lists ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction, Mumbai Indians (MI) are expected to evaluate their squad composition carefully. The five-time champions will need to make strategic decisions to ensure they have sufficient funds available to strengthen areas that require attention.

Managing the overseas contingent will be particularly important for the Mumbai-based franchise. While several international players bring considerable experience and match-winning abilities, the management might consider making a few changes to create room for fresh additions. Let’s have a look some overseas players Mumbai Indians could potentially release before the IPL 2027 mini-auction.

3 overseas stars MI can release ahead of IPL 2027 auction

1. Trent Boult

The situation: An expensive overseas fast-bowling option

Trent Boult continues to be one of the most accomplished left-arm fast bowlers in world cricket. His ability to generate movement with the new ball makes him a valuable asset, particularly during the powerplay. At Mumbai Indians, he has also formed an experienced pace combination alongside Jasprit Bumrah.

However, retaining the New Zealand veteran comes at a considerable financial cost, with his salary standing at ₹12.5 crore.

Why MI could release him?

Despite his experience and reputation, Mumbai Indians might consider whether allocating such a large amount to one overseas fast bowler is the best use of their available budget.

Releasing Boult would immediately provide the franchise with greater financial flexibility ahead of the auction. The management could use those additional funds to strengthen multiple departments rather than committing a substantial amount to a single player.

MI could also explore younger and comparatively cheaper pace-bowling alternatives who can complement Bumrah. Another possibility would be to release Boult and attempt to acquire him again at a lower price, although there would be no guarantee of securing his services.

2. Quinton de Kock

The situation: Limited availability and changing team requirements

Quinton de Kock returned to the Mumbai Indians setup during the previous auction cycle after being acquired for ₹1.5 crore. The experienced South African wicketkeeper-batter brought considerable IPL experience and offered the franchise an additional option at the top of the batting order.

However, his availability during the season became an issue after he withdrew from the competition, limiting the value MI could extract from his services.

Why MI could release him?

The emergence of Ryan Rickelton has potentially changed Mumbai Indians’ requirements in the wicketkeeper-batter department. The younger South African has established himself as an aggressive top-order option, making him a strong candidate for a regular overseas batting position.

With Rickelton providing a potential long-term solution, MI might not find it necessary to carry another overseas wicketkeeper-batter in their squad.

Parting ways with De Kock would allow the franchise to open up an overseas position for a player who addresses a different requirement. Mumbai could instead focus on recruiting an international finisher or an overseas all-rounder capable of contributing with both bat and ball.

3. Keshav Maharaj

The situation: An additional overseas spin option

Keshav Maharaj became part of the Mumbai Indians squad during the previous season after being signed as an injury replacement for Mitchell Santner. The South African left-arm spinner joined the franchise at his base price of ₹75 lakh.

Maharaj brings extensive international experience and is particularly effective at controlling the scoring rate in the middle overs. His accuracy and ability to bowl under pressure make him a useful option in T20 cricket. Nevertheless, his position in the squad could become uncertain once Santner returns to full fitness.

Why MI could release him?

Mumbai Indians could face a selection dilemma if they decide to retain both Maharaj and Santner for the next season. Carrying multiple overseas left-arm spin options might not be the most efficient approach, especially when the franchise needs to maintain a balanced overseas combination.

MI’s batting plans also require sufficient flexibility to accommodate explosive international players such as Will Jacks. Consequently, using two overseas positions on similar bowling options might restrict their ability to bring in players with different skill sets. Also Jacks is a prominent spinner so he can offer some assistance with the ball as well.

Releasing Maharaj would provide Mumbai with another overseas slot to address a more pressing requirement. The franchise could subsequently explore domestic spin-bowling alternatives at the auction while retaining the option of using Santner as its primary overseas spin-bowling all-rounder.
