FC Schalke 04 head coach Miron Muslic took full responsibility for his team’s tactical mistakes following Sunday’s dramatic 2-1 Bundesliga defeat against SC Freiburg. The Austrian-Bosnian trainer’s unusually candid admission prompted an extraordinary response from Freiburg counterpart Julian Schuster, who interrupted his own opening remarks at the post-match press conference to praise Muslic’s honesty.

Sunday’s encounter at the Europa-Park-Stadion saw Freiburg initially dominate proceedings and take a tenth-minute lead through Maximilian Eggestein. Schalke nevertheless recovered and equalised through Bundesliga debutant Adrian Gantenbein in the 30th minute. The visitors subsequently improved considerably after halftime and appeared well positioned to pursue a victory when Freiburg midfielder Yuito Suzuki received his second yellow card in the 64th minute.

Muslic responded to the numerical advantage by making a series of substitutions and altering Schalke’s tactical structure. His attempts to push for a winning goal ultimately backfired, however, as Freiburg substitutes Vincenzo Grifo and Keisuke Goto combined for an 85th-minute winner.

Miron Muslic accepts full responsibility for Schalke’s tactical failure

Speaking in his opening statement at the post-match press conference, Muslic acknowledged that his tactical adjustments had inadvertently helped Freiburg regain a foothold in the contest.

“I changed the tactics so that we could score the 2-1,” Muslic explained. “That didn’t do the team any good. I changed the tactics and committed an error. The team couldn’t handle it. We got caught on the counter attack and gave Freiburg precisely the kind of hope that you can’t give a shorthanded team. This is the type of thing I discuss with my ‘gamechangers’.”

The Schalke coach was referring to a series of changes made after Suzuki’s dismissal. Muslic initially introduced Edin Dzeko and Ron Schallenberg for Junior Adamu and Satoshi Tanaka in the 69th minute, refreshing both his attacking options and central midfield.

Ten minutes later, the coach made three further substitutions. Hee-chan Hwang replaced Moussa Sylla, Timo Becker took over from Maximilian Wober, and attacking midfielder Adil Aouchiche entered in place of right-sided wing-back Adrian Gantenbein.

The final change was particularly noteworthy. With Schalke enjoying a numerical advantage, replacing a wing-back with a more attack-oriented midfielder suggested that Muslic was attempting to commit additional resources forward. The precise positional adjustments cannot be established from the substitutions alone, but the changes were consistent with his stated intention of pushing for a second goal.

The risks associated with altering Schalke’s established defensive balance became apparent as Freiburg began finding opportunities to advance despite being a player short. Muslic’s reference to his “game-changers” also carried particular significance. As Get German Football News detailed following Schalke’s September victory over Union Berlin, the coach deliberately avoids describing his bench players as substitutes, preferring terminology that emphasizes their capacity to influence matches.

Robin Gosens explained at the time that the distinction was psychologically important, while Muslic praised the impact of his replacements against Bayern Munich and Union. Those matches had provided striking examples of Schalke’s bench strengthening the side at crucial moments.

Sunday’s defeat presented a very different outcome. Having previously celebrated his “game-changers” for helping secure Bundesliga results, Muslic now accepted that his own interventions had contributed to Schalke leaving Freiburg empty-handed.

“I’m very disappointed because a point was absolutely within reach today,” Muslic concluded. “And I have to take full responsibility for the tactical failure and loss today.”

Julian Schuster applauds his Schalke counterpart’s honesty

When it was Schuster’s turn to address the assembled journalists, the Freiburg coach immediately departed from his intended opening statement.

“I actually wanted to start off [speaking] about something else,” Schuster noted when it was his turn to deliver his opening statement. “But I have to say I found that to be truly great. I’ve rarely experienced something like that, that a head coach chose those words. I think he captured it perfectly and that was truly big of him to stand here and say ‘I truly made a mistake’.”

Schuster went on to suggest that Muslic’s public acceptance of responsibility reflected the relationship he had established with his players.

“I think that’s a reflection of how you and your team treat one another,” Schuster continued. “I find that to be truly impressive. It’s not a coincidence how he [Muslic] presents himself. In the last days, [our preparation] was very intense because Schalke, the way they defend with their conviction, is among the best in the Bundesliga.”

The Freiburg coach also explained why Schalke had presented such a difficult challenge despite his team’s promising start.

“We needed to score the 2-0, but that’s precisely what makes them [Schalke] dangerous,” Schuster continued. “No matter what sort of control [of the match] you have, irrespective of how superior you are, they can always get back into the game. All they needed was one set-piece, one shot, and they were back in the game. That’s exactly what happened with them.”

A magnanimous exchange between Bundesliga coaches

Schuster subsequently spoke at length about the emotional significance of Freiburg’s victory with ten men, particularly the resilience his players demonstrated in overcoming a difficult second half. The two coaches’ unusually extensive opening statements also provided an opportunity for a lighter moment.

“Whether or not the press conference will be more interesting after your questions, we’ll have to see,” the press officer said. “The bar has been set quite high.”

The remark drew laughter from journalists in the room.

Muslic’s willingness to acknowledge his own tactical mistake had already made an impression. Schuster’s decision to publicly recognize that honesty made the moment all the more remarkable.
