BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla opens up on Rohit Sharma’s retirement rumours

Rohit Sharma‘s future in international cricket has once again become a major talking point, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has firmly shut down all speculation. Days after the veteran opener answered his critics with a memorable century at Lord’s, a senior board official has reiterated that the Indian star remains an integral part of the national setup and that reports linking him with retirement hold no truth.

Rajeev Shukla clears the air on Rohit Sharma’s future

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has categorically rejected rumours suggesting Rohit Sharma is considering retirement from international cricket. Speaking to reporters in Agra during the inauguration of the mini auction for the fourth season of the UP T20 League, Shukla insisted there was no discussion within the board regarding the 39-year-old stepping away from the game.

“Rohit Sharma is a part of our team and is continuing to play. The things being circulated in the media and on social media have no meaning. As of now, there is no question of his retirement,” Shukla said.

His comments come after widespread speculation surrounded Rohit’s future during India’s ODI series against England. Questions over his place in the team grew louder after the experienced opener endured a prolonged lean run with the bat, leading to reports that the third ODI at Lord’s could mark his farewell appearance in Indian colours. However, Rohit silenced the rumours in the best possible fashion by producing one of the finest knocks of his ODI career.

Lord’s masterclass answers critics despite series defeat

Facing mounting pressure, Rohit delivered a captain’s innings at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. The right-handed opener hammered 138 runs from just 110 deliveries, becoming the first Indian batter to register an ODI century at the historic venue. His innings featured a blend of elegant strokeplay and calculated aggression, reminding everyone why he remains one of the world’s premier white-ball batters.

Despite Rohit’s brilliance, India failed to cross the finish line as England clinched the match and sealed the three-match ODI series 2-1. The defeat capped a difficult tour for the visitors, who had earlier suffered a 2-0 series loss against Ireland before enduring a 4-0 whitewash in the T20I series against England.
While the team results were disappointing, Rohit’s century shifted the narrative surrounding his future, with many believing the innings was a strong response to doubts over his longevity at the highest level.

BCCI backs current leadership despite criticism

Apart from addressing Rohit’s retirement rumours, Shukla also defended India’s current leadership group amid increasing scrutiny following the team’s mixed performances on the UK tour.

Questions have been raised over head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill after India’s struggles in both T20Is and ODIs. However, the BCCI vice-president made it clear that the board has complete faith in the existing setup.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the decision on who stays in the team and who does not rests with the selectors. The Indian team is performing well and winning matches, so there is no need for any changes at present,” Shukla added.
